FAQ: FAQ

What is Counseling?

It is the process of assisting and guiding the clients to resolve their personal, social, and psychological problems.

Who is a Counselor?

A counselor is a trained person, who exhibits unconditional positive regard and a non-judgmental attitude.
Counselors are trained with different types of psychological approaches and equipped with the required set of skills.

Why do I need the help of a Professional Counselor?

When we are stressed out, the first thing that is getting hijacked is the thought process because of the overwhelming effect of emotions.

At Resolving Minds, we analyze both as an outsider and an insider and throw light on the issue so that the client will get a whole new perspective.

Do I need to have a crisis to seek help?

Of course not.
Even if you are confused and caught up in the middle of any decision making, you can seek help to get clarity. Emotional well-being contributes to our physical well-being. Mental stress leads to unexplained aches and pains and thereby detrimental to our physical health. Hence, it is always wise to seek help at an early stage.

What is the difference between talking to a Counselor or to my friend or family member?

Talking to a friend or family member may be soothing, but talking to a psychologist will be therapeutic. One significant reason for this effect is the considerable lack of fear of judgement.
Friends and family members may show vulnerability. More often than not, the expression of emotion in a family ends up in drama than a solution.

Why should I not just take medication?

Though medications help reduce stress, insomnia, aches, and pains, they can have multiple side effects most of the time.
It is a known fact that medicines are nothing but a combination of chemicals. Yes, medications can reduce immediate severity, but it is always good to think for the long-run.

My partner and I are having problems… which type of counseling I can opt?

Marital issues are best solved through individual counseling rather than joint sessions.
Joint sessions not so successful when compared to individual sessions. Even if the other partner is not voluntarily coming forward for the counseling, one partner can always work successfully on marital issues.

Will my counselling session be private?

Of course, the main ethical principle of counseling is confidentiality.

Do you prescribe medication for anxiety or depression?

No.   We will not prescribe medicines for depression or anxiety. We give only psychological therapies and teach some breathing and stress releasing exercises.

Can I opt for only one session?

Yes. As we discuss face-to-face in the first session, the need for further sessions will be known. So you can always opt for one session.

Is there any guidelines to be followed for online counselling?

Yes. Please make yourself available in a calm and private room without any other disturbances, like mobile phones, landlines, televisions, etc. five minutes prior to the scheduled time.

Do you insist on video calling?

Yes. Since we work on thought, emotion and behavior pattern, face to face or a video session is a must.

What are the ethical principles of Counseling?

A Counselor should be a trustworthy person and should maintain confidentiality. The counselor should treat the client with respect and give autonomy in deciding his/her own life’s decisions.
The counselor should act in the best interest of the client and should not harm the client emotionally, financially, and sexually. A counselor should be just and fair to all the clients and treat them with dignity.

What is the difference between a Psychiatrist and a Counseling Psychologist?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and they prescribe medication for serious mental disorders.  Psychologists are not authorized to prescribe medicines. They can help clients only with counseling (talk therapy) and other stress relief exercises.
A Psychiatrist can provide both medication and psychotherapy.  Psychologists work on feeling, thought, and behavior patterns and apply psychological approaches accordingly.
